Canadian woman charged with importing cocaine - 6 July 2010
Joint release with Australian Federal Police
A 33-year-old Canadian woman is scheduled to appear in Sydney Central Local Court today charged with importing a substance believed to be cocaine, concealed in suitcases.
The woman was stopped for questioning by Customs and Border Protection officers following a positive reaction by a detector dog when she arrived at Sydney International Airport on a flight from Canada yesterday.
During questioning, Customs and Border Protection officers became suspicious that she may have been concealing drugs in the lining of her suitcases.
The woman was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
It will be alleged in court that the woman concealed approximately 3 kilograms of cocaine in three suitcases.
Further forensic testing will be undertaken to confirm the exact weight and purity of the substance.
The woman has been charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to Section 307.1 Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment and/or a $825,000 fine.
