A proficiency maintenance and competency accreditaion regime is used to ensure continual operational effectiveness of each team. In addition to regularly testing each dog's detection capabilities, handlers are also up-dated on any improved training and operational techniques. This is accomplished by applying competency standards for the maintenance and deployment of detector dogs.
