detector dog program - new directions
While the main focus of the Customs Detector Dog Program is for the search and seizure of narcotics, Customs is continually looking at methods of improving current methods and new applications for detector dog teams.
Firearms/Explosives Detector Dogs (FEDD)
In response to increased security requirements at Australia's border, a pilot program introduced teams trained to find firearms and explosives in the Customs environment during 2003. This initiative drew on the experience of both domestic and international agencies to achieve a high quality result. These dogs have been trained to locate a range of different types of firearms, component parts and explosives.
Customs employs risk management techniques to ensure that appropriate response procedures are undertaken including the involvment of other Commonwealth or State agencies as appropriate.
FEDD teams are currently deployed across Australia, conducting Customs searches and assisting State and Federal agencies.
