help protect the border and supplement your income at the same time!

Customs Flexible Employees are employed at most international airports around Australia and positions are advertised when vacancies become available. As a Customs Flexible Employee your key role will be to perform Outwards Immigration functions for passengers leaving the country, process Tourist Refund Scheme claims, and assist with queue marshalling of inwards arriving passengers.

Unlike other Customs Offices deployed at airports, CFEs are not on a set roster but work irregular and intermittent hours, to assist our airports in processing passengers during peak periods. While the hours vary from one airport to another, the shifts tend to be approximately 4 hours in length, can be early mornings, late nights and on weekends.

As you will be employed to assist with peak periods, you may be called in at very short notice - so your ability to be flexible is a key criteria when considering applying.

CFE positions are not the same as Customs Trainee positions and are not an alternative route for gaining a full time position with Customs. These positions could suit students, retirees, parents with school age children; anyone who has no need for a full time job but would like to supplement their income, can be flexible about the hours they work and the notice they require, and have a desire to contribute to Australia's border protection at the same time.

All CFE positions are advertised on this website, so if there aren't positions vacant today, remember to check the site regularly.

Make sure you read all available information on Customs Flexible Employees before you consider applying:

The training course is approximately 4-5 weeks full-time (can vary depending on the airport and the roles undertaken). On successful completion of training, participants are asked to nominate their availability and can then be called upon for shifts during peak processing times.

If you:

  • Are an Australian citizen and 18 years of age or older (no upper age limit applies!)
  • are happy to work early mornings, late nights and weekends
  • are available to work during peak periods such as Australian/NZ school holidays and Northern Hemisphere summer holidays
  • like contact with the community
  • are comfortable using a computer
  • can deal with potential conflict situations
  • are comfortable wearing a uniform
  • would like to supplement your income but don't need a full time or regular job
  • want to help protect Australia's border
