UK ePassport holders' trial

The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) began a trial on Thursday, 25 July 2013 to open SmartGate to eligible UK citizens arriving at Sydney and Adelaide airports.

To be eligible to use SmartGate to self-process through Australia’s passport control, UK citizens must be:

  • flying into Australia
  • travelling on a valid UK ePassport; and
  • aged 16 years or older.

Eligible UK citizens are the third group of non-Australians to be able to use SmartGate when arriving in Australia. The first being New Zealand ePassport holders and the second being the US Global Entry Program members in November 2012.

On 16 September 2013 the UK trial was rolled out to all remaining airports. The national trial continued until the end of October after which the use of SmartGate was extended permanently to eligible UK citizens.
