Trans-Tasman trial
SmartGate is a simple way to self-process through passport control, involving a kiosk and a gate.
It gives eligible travellers arriving into Australia's international airports a secure, efficient way to clear through passport control.
A trans-Tasman trial of a new capability to integrate New Zealand SmartGate departures with the Australian SmartGate arrivals commenced at Gold Coast Airport in July 2011.
Eligible passengers who choose to use SmartGate when departing from Auckland and Christchurch international airports now have the option to complete part of the Australian arrivals process at the New Zealand SmartGate kiosk.
Travellers can then bypass the Australian SmartGate kiosk on arrival at Gold Coast Airport and go straight to the Australian SmartGate arrivals gate for the identity check and final clearance.
You can use SmartGate provided you are 18 years or over and an Australian or New Zealand ePassport holder.
More information on the trans-Tasman trial can be found in the SmartGate trans-Tasman Trial fact sheet and flyer available on the SmartGate resources page.
